GP Rating Course

The General Purpose (GP) Rating Course is a 6-month DG Shipping approved pre-sea training program — the fastest and most accessible entry into the Merchant Navy. Candidates are trained in seamanship, engine room operations, fire safety, and survival at sea.

After completing this course and obtaining the necessary certificates, candidates join ships as Ordinary Seamen, Deck Ratings, or Engine Ratings and can progressively advance to officer levels through sea time and competency examinations.

Eligibility Criteria

Education: 10th pass with minimum 40% overall & 40% in English (OR 12th pass)
Age: 17.5 to 25 years at time of course commencement
Eyesight: 6/6 vision (unaided). No colour blindness
Medical: Physically fit as per DG Shipping Medical Rules 2000
Passport: Mandatory before joining the course
Swimming: Basic swimming ability required

Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS)

DNS is a 1-year residential pre-sea training program approved by DG Shipping. It is the most popular fast-track route for students who want to become Deck Officers in the Merchant Navy. After completing the DNS course and 18 months of sea time, candidates can appear for the 2nd Mate (FG) examination.

Eligibility for DNS

Education: 12th (PCM) with minimum 60% aggregate marks
English: Minimum 50% in English (Class 10 or 12)
Age: 17 to 25 years (5 years relaxation for Tribal/Hill areas)
Eyesight: 6/6 unaided. No Lasik. No colour blindness
Medical: As per DG Shipping MS Medical Rules 2000
Entrance: IMU CET (Indian Maritime University CET) or direct for some colleges

The ETO is a specialised officer on modern ships responsible for all electrical, electronic, and automation systems. This is a relatively new but highly demanded position in the merchant fleet.
